Catholic Charities of the Archdiocese of Newark (CCAN) has once again demonstrated its commitment to serving the community, as an unforgettable Valentine’s Day event unfolded for the Hilltop Seniors in Newark. 

The generous sponsorship of Irvington Mayor Tony Vauss made this heartwarming occasion possible, showcasing the incredible impact that collaborative community efforts can achieve.

A Day of Cherished Memories and Community Spirit

The seniors at Hilltop Seniors in Newark experienced a day filled with joy and meaningful connections, creating cherished memories that will undoubtedly last a lifetime. 

An exciting auction led to seniors winning a limousine ride and a group dinner with the mayor and winning police officers. The seniors had an absolute blast and, as a proud partner of CCAN, we’d like to extend sincere thank you to everyone involved in making this heartwarming event possible!

April is Stress Awareness Month, a time to focus on supporting individuals dealing with stress and its impacts on well-being. This month, we shine a light on the challenges faced by those affected by stress within our community and the significance of offering support.

Family Service League’s Contribution

Family Service League (FSL) is at the forefront of promoting psychological well-being and healthy relationships within our community. Their efforts have resulted in 3,403 counseling sessions provided to 256 survivors of sexual violence. This demonstrates their dedication to solving the challenges faced by those highlighted in this month’s theme.

Family Service League (FSL) provides free, confidential, round-the-clock access to support and services for families and survivors of sexual violence. Their services include advocacy, accompaniment, information, referrals, and counseling. FSL strives to help families identify and access their own strengths and resources that will nurture healthy, lasting relationships.

Ms. Deanna Craig at George Washington Carver School fosters kindness and cooperation through her therapy canine visits and more.

For years, Ms. Deanna Craig has been visiting George Washington Carver school with her therapy canines, establishing herself as a beloved and integral member of the GW Family. Her dedication and impact on the community have been truly remarkable.

Fostering Kindness & Cooperation 

Recently, Ms. Craig delighted the teachers by gifting an electronic copy of the book “The Jelly Donut Difference.” This heartwarming gesture introduced the students to the powerful messages of kindness and the importance of cooperation. 

To further reinforce these valuable lessons, Ms. Craig went the extra mile by personally requesting each student’s favorite doughnut flavor and surprising them with these sweet treats, thoughtfully provided by Dunkin’ Donuts, during a recent visit.

The Role of Youth Consultation Service

The Youth Consultation Service Educational Division plays a pivotal role in nurturing and educating students, grades K–8, with diverse behavioral issues at the YCS G.W. School. Classified students are referred to the YCS schools through Child Study Team referrals or residential placements, where they benefit from a structured program tailored to their needs.

Stress Awareness Month: Supporting Survivors In The Community

Highlighting Family Service League which is supporting survivors of sexual violence in innovative and creative ways. 

In the spirit of Stress Awareness Month, it’s crucial for our community to focus on supporting individuals facing stress and trauma. This month, we highlight the need to come together and uplift those who may be struggling with various life events, including survivors of sexual violence. This month especially, let’s raise awareness, show compassion, and take action to support those in need.

The Role of Family Service League (FSL)

As a Holiday Fund partner, Family Service League (FSL) plays a pivotal role in addressing the challenges faced by individuals highlighted in this month’s theme of Stress Awareness. 

In fact, in 2021, FSL initiated a program with Uber to provide rides for survivors of sexual violence to counseling sessions and accompaniments. Even after the pilot program ended, FSL maintained its commitment to providing rides to survivors and their significant others. In 2023, FSL provided an incredible 575 rides to survivors and their significant others for counseling and accompaniments.

FSL’s overarching mission is to strengthen and support those seeking counseling for any life event, provide sexual violence advocacy services, and offer educational programs to combat sexual violence. The organization strives to help families identify and access their own strengths and resources that will nurture healthy, lasting relationships. All of FSL’s services are open to individuals, their significant others, and family members, reflecting its client-centered approach and commitment to making services available to all in the community.
